John Olyn Melvin, 69, of Du Quoin, passed away at 4:15 A.M., Thursday, April 7, 2005 at his residence.
John was a tuck pointer in construction.  He had also worked for Harold Parker for several years doing maintenance on amusement machines.  He was of the Protestant faith.  He was a member of the Du Quoin VFW, Du Quoin American Legion and Eagles Lodge #779.  He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was born November 12, 1935 at Du Quoin, the son of Joe and Violet (Shelby) Melvin.
He married Marilyn L. (Bowlin) Short on November 12, 1993 at Paducah, Kentucky and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, one son - John Olyn Melvin, Jr. of Du Quoin, five step daughters - Robin Pascoe of Florida, Tammie Benes of Mulkeytown, Rosalyn Shaw of Du Quoin, Peggy Ratajczyk of Du Bois and Jamie Hall of Du Bois, six brothers - Christopher Melvin and Mark Melvin, both of Nebraska, David Melvin of Ohio, Vernon Melvin, Dennis Melvin, and Joseph Melvin, all of Du Quoin, two sisters - Nancy McNeely and Jo Ann Robey, both of Du Quoin, three grandchildren and nine step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Norman Melvin and William Melvin, and one sister - Jean Ellen Melvin.
Memorial services will be at 6:00 P.M., Monday, April 11, 2005 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Sandra VonLanken officiating.
